Live Like a Local
Living on the barrier island is mostly a matter of timing: when to cross the bridge, when the season starts, and what to do before a storm. Services differ by jurisdiction because the city, the Town of Indian River Shores and the county each run their own, so your address determines your trash day and your police department.
Nothing about island life is complicated, but a lot of it is local knowledge that nobody writes down.
Here is the practical layer: traffic, utilities, storm season and the habits that separate residents from visitors.

Quiet, walkable in the village and car-dependent everywhere else. Peak season, January through March, shows up in restaurant waits and bridge traffic. Services vary by jurisdiction, so your trash day, police department and utility provider depend on your address.
When Is the Best Time to Cross the Bridge?
In season, the Merrill Barber Bridge moves fastest before 8:00 a.m., midday, and after 6:00 p.m. The 17th Street bridge is usually the faster southern crossing, and the Wabasso bridge is the least trafficked of the three year-round.
| Bridge | Serves | Best for | Timing tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wabasso (CR 510) | North island | North island and Sebastian | Rarely congested |
| Merrill Barber (Beachland) | Central island | Village and downtown | 8–9 a.m., 4:30–6 p.m. in season |
| 17th Street | South island | South county, medical center | School pickup hours |
How Do You Prepare for Hurricane Season?
Season runs June 1 to November 30. The island is an evacuation zone, so residents plan for leaving rather than sheltering: shutters up early, fuel and prescriptions before a watch is issued, and a decision made before the bridges get busy.
- 01
Know Your Zone
The entire barrier island is in the first evacuation zone and evacuates first.
- 02
Prep in May
Shutter hardware, generator service and tree trimming all book out once a storm forms.
- 03
Leave Early
Bridge and I-95 traffic build within hours of an evacuation order.
Is the Barrier Island in an Evacuation Zone?
Yes. The entire Vero Beach barrier island is in the first evacuation zone for hurricanes, and county orders typically move it out before the mainland. Sign up for Indian River County Emergency Management alerts so you hear evacuation orders as soon as they are issued.
