Do You Need a Club Membership to Live on the Island?

No. Four island communities require club membership as a condition of ownership: John's Island, Windsor, Orchid Island and Sea Oaks. Everywhere else, including Riomar, club membership is optional or not offered.

Where Is the Vero Beach Barrier Island?

The barrier island sits directly east of mainland Vero Beach in Indian River County, Florida, separated from it by the Indian River Lagoon. The 32963 ZIP code runs roughly 22 miles north to south along the island, which is reached by three bridges: Wabasso, Merrill Barber (Beachland Boulevard) and 17th Street.

Which Beachside Neighborhoods Are Gated?

Many are gated, including The Moorings, John's Island, Windsor, Orchid Island, Sea Oaks, Castaway Cove and Bermuda Bay. Old Riomar is an open community, while Central Beach is an open area made up of several communities and residential streets. Indian River Shores is an open town that contains several gated enclaves within its limits.

Is Beachside Vero Beach the Same as 32963?

Yes. 32963 covers the barrier island and only the barrier island, so the ZIP code is a reliable shorthand for a beachside address. Mainland Vero Beach uses 32960, 32962, 32966, 32967 and 32968. If a listing shows any of those, it is not on the island.

Are the Beaches on the Island Public?

Most of the shoreline is fronted by private property, but public access points provide free entry to the beach along the island, seven with year-round lifeguards. Under Florida law the wet sand seaward of the mean high water line is public, so you can walk the full length of the beach as long as you enter at a public access point.

Which Neighborhoods Can You Walk to Ocean Drive From?

Old Riomar and the southern edge of Riomar are within about five minutes of the village shops and restaurants on foot. Several other Central Beach streets are also walkable, while communities farther north and south generally require a drive.

Is the Barrier Island in an Evacuation Zone?

Yes. The entire Vero Beach barrier island is in the first evacuation zone for hurricanes, and county orders typically move it out before the mainland. Sign up for Indian River County Emergency Management alerts so you hear evacuation orders as soon as they are issued.

Do Island Restaurants Close in the Summer?

Some do. September and early October are the quietest weeks of the year, and several island kitchens close for two to four weeks of maintenance and staff vacation. Most of the Ocean Drive village stays open year-round with reduced midweek hours.

How Tall Can Buildings Be on the Barrier Island?

It depends on the jurisdiction. In the City of Vero Beach the limit is 35 feet, adopted into the zoning code in 1973 and written into the City Charter in 1989, so any increase requires a voter referendum. The Town of Indian River Shores has its own zoning code: single-family zones are generally capped at 35 feet, while multi-family zones allow up to 40 feet or three stories, which is why some oceanfront condominiums in the Shores stand slightly taller. Unincorporated Indian River County follows county zoning height caps. A few older buildings, such as The Village Spires, predate these rules and stand taller.

Can You Walk to Dinner on the Barrier Island?

Yes, if you are in Central Beach, Old Riomar or the south edge of Riomar. The Ocean Drive village concentrates a dozen restaurants within four blocks, so residents of those neighborhoods routinely walk. From every other neighborhood on the island it is a drive of eight to twenty-five minutes.

Is There a Grocery Store on the Barrier Island?

There is no full-service supermarket on the barrier island. The nearest Publix and Winn-Dixie locations are on the mainland across the bridges. What the island does have: Village Beach Market on A1A (a gourmet market with everyday staples, wine and prepared foods since 1980) and Ryder's Gourmet Market. Most residents cross a bridge only for a full grocery run.

What Is the Difference Between Riomar and Old Riomar?

Both are open, ungated neighborhoods, and neither requires club membership. Riomar is the neighborhood around the Riomar Country Club course, which opened in 1919. Old Riomar refers to the original beachside street grid nearby. Both sit within walking distance of Ocean Drive, with deep lots and mature oak canopy.
